Then, he asked me if two people exchanged cells, at what point does one become the other. I felt that the answer has to do with the soul and its location).

Meaning: Scientists are unable to define consciousness because their definition of consciousness is the mind. The mind is the seat of wisdom, and wisdom cannot be defined. In the Chapter: The Path of Salvation, God defines what consciousness really is.
In answer to my son’s question as to when a person becomes the other if they exchanged cells, the answer is “where the mind goes, we go.” Only God can extract the mind. A physical exchange of cells does not transfer the mind of one person to another. For the mind is beyond the physical brain.
